Dr. Smith's clinical interests include cardiovascular health, diabetes, physical medicine, inflammatory bowel diseases, interstitial cystitis and men’s health.
Healing Philosophy
Dr. Smith believes that healing is a process that emerges inherently from the body. He believes his role as a physician is to facilitate healing by supporting the patient – mind, body, spirit and community – by matching the appropriate level of therapeutic intervention to the severity of disease.
Past Experience
Dr. Smith has completed preceptorships in cardiology at Group Health Cooperative, physical medicine, and naturopathic primary care. He has additional training in physical medicine, including massage therapy and osseous manipulation, IV therapy, and minor surgical procedures. As a resident Dr. Smith has participated in multiple specialty clinics, including diabetes and cardiovascular health, adjunctive cancer care, women’s health and IV therapy.
His passion for integrated community health led him to collaborate on integrative medical opportunities between MD and ND students at conventional medical schools, to participate in the Institute of Medicine’s Symposium on Integrative Medicine in Washington, DC, and to become involved in lobbying on a national level with the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Before embarking on his naturopathic medical degree, Dr. Smith worked as a physical therapy aide at Northwest Hospital and West Seattle Physical Therapy. He also helped run a rehabilitation clinic at Northwest Hospital, and was involved in research at Children’s Hospital.
Education & Affiliations
Dr. Smith earned his ND at Bastyr University. As a Seattle native, he is excited to connect with the local community as a physician. He enjoys spending his time off participating in Seattle soccer and volleyball leagues, supporting the Seattle Sounders, kayaking on Lake Union, spending time with friends and family and, when able, traveling.
He is currently a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American Holistic Medical Association and Physicians for a National Health Program. He was previously licensed as a massage practitioner in Washington State.
